Phone and folded notice on a kitchen table

211

211 finds services. It does not take your eviction case.

Dial 211 for rent help, shelter, food, and utilities. In Oregon and southwest Washington the operator is 211info.org — a different site from 211.org, which is the national locator. Legal aid is LawHelp.org when the paper names a court. Mixing 211 with a possession case is how a day gets spent on the wrong phone tree.

You do not have to solve the whole case tonight. Take the next right step.

If you are scared tonight

You still have rights in this unit. A landlord notice is not a judgment. Keep the paper. Photograph every page. If it names a court, a case number, or a date to appear, that is a case — legal aid the same day, not only 211. You do not have to solve the whole case tonight.

Danger: 911. Mental-health crisis: 988. Domestic violence: 1-800-799-7233. Those three are not 211, and they are not this classroom.

211, 211info.org, and 211.org are not one site

211 is a three-digit number. United Way and local partners operate it. 211.org is the national locator — it helps you find the 211 that covers an address. 211info.org is the regional operator for Oregon and southwest Washington. Dialing 211 in that region still works. The websites are not interchangeable, and neither one is a lawyer.

211info ranks because it is the official 211 for that region. Google is not wrong to show it for “211 Oregon.” This page is for the query it does not own: whether 211 is the right door for the paper in your hand.

What 211 is good at: rent assistance referrals, shelter, food, utilities, and a human who can name a local program. What 211 is not: an appearance in circuit court, a HUD discrimination investigation, or a city housing-code complaint.

When 211 is the wrong first call

If the paper names a court: Oregon Law Help, the Eviction Defense Project (through oregonrentersrights.org), Stay Housed LA in Los Angeles, or LawHelp.org nationally. 211 can still help with rent or shelter on a second call.

If the harm is discrimination: HUD, or a local fair-housing group — Housing Rights Center in Los Angeles, Fair Housing Council of Oregon in Oregon. 211 does not take that complaint.

If the unit is not livable: the city inspector and a written request to the landlord. 211 may know a repair or weatherization program. It does not inspect the unit.

Oregon: 211info is one of four renter doors

Community Alliance of Tenants is a tenants union. oregonrentersrights.org is a self-help hub and a pointer to the Eviction Defense Project. 211info.org is regional 211. Oregon Law Help is legal aid. ORS Chapter 90 is the statute. Four doors plus the code. They are not the same call.

A renter who searches “211info eviction” is often asking whether dialing 211 will stop a lockout. It will not. It may find rent help that makes the next month possible. The FED still needs legal aid.

Questions

Direct answers

Is 211info.org the same as 211.org?

No. 211info.org is the regional 211 operator for Oregon and southwest Washington. 211.org is the national locator. Dialing 211 in Oregon still works. Neither site is a lawyer.

Can 211 stop my eviction?

No. 211 refers you to local services. A possession case is legal aid and, in some cities, an eviction-defense network such as Stay Housed LA. Keep the paper.

Is 211 free?

The call is free. The programs 211 names may have their own eligibility rules. Confirm with the program, not with this classroom.

What if I am outside Oregon?

Dial 211 or use 211.org to find the operator for your address. The job is the same: local services, not the court docket.

Does 211 take housing-discrimination complaints?

No. HUD and a local fair-housing organization take those. 211 may still help with shelter or rent while that complaint is pending.
